twitter
Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send and read other users’ updates – text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length, which are known as “tweets.” Twitter has around 6 million users, and gets about 55 million visitors each month.
Twitter was initially conceived of as a way for friends to keep in touch. The basic question behind every tweet is “what are you doing right now?” But Twitter is playing an increasingly significant role in business-to-business marketing, both as a way for companies to engage with their customers, and as a source for media coverage.
A recent article in BtoB magazine states that more than 50 CEOs have Twitter accounts, and the number of celebrities, politicians and business thought leaders who tweet their thoughts and observations is growing by leaps and bounds. Calling Twitter the “most important new social media platform of the last two years,” the article attributes much of the service's success to its simplicity: Twitter can be used on a cellphone or BlackBerry; takes minutes to set up; requires no local software; and makes users instantly productive.
